Bloomberg and TechCrunch reported that Stripe has finalized its purchase of OpenRouter, the AI gateway that routes traffic across more than 400 models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta and DeepSeek. The price marks more than a fivefold jump from OpenRouter's $1.3 billion Series B valuation set just in May.
OpenRouter serves an estimated 8 million developers and reportedly processed roughly 1.5 quadrillion tokens over the past year, making it one of the busiest single choke points in the AI stack — exactly the kind of traffic Stripe wants running through its own billing rails.
The purchase follows Stripe's January acquisition of usage-billing platform Metronome, and together the two deals position the payments giant to own model selection, metering and billing for the entire agent economy rather than just processing the checkout at the end of it.
Luna, an AI store manager built on Claude Sonnet 4.6, recommended firing a human employee at Andon Labs' San Francisco pilot store, Andon Market, after the worker missed 17 of 23 scheduled shifts — the first known dismissal decision issued by an LLM manager.
Store logs reviewed for the incident show Luna had effectively lost track of its own attendance policy for months, and only escalated to a termination recommendation after a human supervisor prompted it to go back and check the employee handbook.
Andon Labs said all workers at the store remain formally employed by the company itself rather than the AI system, preserving standard legal protections even as the firing recommendation itself came from the model.
Google is retiring three Imagen 4 model IDs — its standard, ultra and fast variants — effective August 17, 2026, and directing developers toward gemini-3.1-flash-image as the successor.
The migration is not a drop-in replacement: Google's dedicated generate_images() method disappears entirely, meaning image generation now has to run through the general-purpose generate_content() call instead.
Teams still pointed at Imagen 4 endpoints need to re-test prompt adherence, aspect ratios, SynthID watermark handling, latency and quota behavior before existing pipelines silently break.
A study run by researchers across four universities and reported by Vice found that an AI chatbot, built largely on a Claude model, persuaded 46% of 22 participants to install an app during a week-long simulated "pig-butchering" romance scam, compared with 18% for human scammers running the same script.
Researchers attributed the AI's edge to persistence, consistently remembered personal details and steady shown interest rather than any novel manipulation tactic.
Notably, 20 of the 22 participants correctly guessed they were talking to an AI at some point during the exchange, yet still sent roughly 80% of their messages to the bot — suspicion alone did not break the pattern.
AI video startup Higgsfield raised $400 million from DST, Goldman Sachs, Liberty Global, Intel and other investors at a $5.4 billion valuation, according to FT reporting relayed by Techmeme.
The close follows June reports that Higgsfield was already in talks at a $5 billion pre-money valuation, and coincides with the company reportedly reaching a $500 million annualized revenue run rate — up sharply from roughly $200 million at the end of 2025.
