Jamie Dimon is reaching out personally to the heads of American companies rushing to use AI — and making one request: join an expanded industry coalition to confront what AI could do to critical infrastructure. JPMorgan, the largest US bank, helped found the Alliance for Critical Infrastructure (ACI) alongside Mastercard and Berkshire Hathaway Energy, and Dimon is now broadening its mandate as corporate America embeds AI into systems the economy cannot afford to lose.
Reuters reports that more than 40 companies across financial services, energy, water, utilities, telecommunications, airlines and railroads have been approached, with Dimon directly contacting CEOs of major and regional banks and technology firms. The outreach began in July, calls are being scheduled for August, and the revamped group is expected to be fully operational by the end of the year — an industry response-and-information-sharing forum that plans to work with the administration on AI and technology threats.
The effort puts organizational muscle behind warnings Dimon has made for years. In July he cautioned that giving individuals access to highly capable systems like Anthropic's Mythos could be akin to handing out "ballistic missiles". A vulnerability found in one sector — a bank, a utility, a railroad — could carry lessons for every other industry that depends on the same cloud providers, telecom networks and identity systems.
Sundar Pichai told Google DeepMind teams that the company is entering "the next chapter" of its AI momentum, and backed it with a leadership change. Demis Hassabis will become Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet while continuing to lead Isomorphic Labs, and Koray Kavukcuoglu — the unit's CTO and Alphabet's Chief AI Architect, a DeepMind veteran of 13 years — steps up as SVP of Google DeepMind, overseeing Gemini model development, Frontier AI research and the Gemini app and developer teams.
The memo is a statement of intent: "We are the only company that has the full stack and we're world-class at every layer." Pichai pointed to momentum markers — Flash models in high demand, a live Cyber model, and Gemma downloads past 900 million — while committing Google to keep pushing at the frontier, including upcoming model releases.
The most striking departure: after a 27-year run that helped build Google's search infrastructure and its modern neural-network era, Jeff Dean and Senior Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat are leaving to launch an independent public benefit corporation aimed at accelerating discoveries in machine learning, science and engineering.
The World Bank's 2026 World Development Report, released Tuesday, upends a common assumption: generative AI threatens only 4.5% of existing jobs in low- and middle-income countries, versus 14.2% in high-income countries. Meanwhile, 16.2% of developing-economy jobs could see productivity meaningfully boosted — nearly matching the 18.7% expected in rich nations. The promise lies less in replacing workers than in amplifying what they can do.
"AI has thrown developing economies a lifeline, and they should seize it," said Indermit Gill, the World Bank's chief economist. "They do not need large models or big data centers to reap its benefits. By adapting small, low-cost AI tools to local conditions, they can bring better medical care, education, judicial services and agricultural extension within reach of millions. But they must hurry: AI is spreading faster and is more context-specific than earlier general-purpose technologies like electricity and the internet."
For India, the report estimates AI could help achieve in a decade what might otherwise take a century. About one in five firms with more than five employees in India, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria and Thailand already use AI chatbots, but the Bank warns many countries still lack reliable electricity, connectivity, skilled workers, quality data and strong institutions — and that governments must guard against bias and privacy harms as they scale adoption.
Before chatbots worked, tech types joked that AI stood for "actually Indians" — that what looked like wizardry was really skilled work done in Hyderabad or Bengaluru. That joke is now the risk: the tasks outsourced to India, from software development to routine processes like payroll, are among those AI is best placed to automate.
Yet The Economist's assessment, published from Mumbai, is that the sector is surviving — so far. AI is reshaping India's technology industry, shifting work from pure outsourcing toward in-house operations and creating fresh demand for AI-skilled workers, even as the traditional labour-arbitrage model that built the sector comes under pressure.
The burden is falling on new entrants. The technology is making life harder for many graduates, who enter a market where the routine entry-level roles that once absorbed hundreds of thousands each year are exactly the ones AI compresses first — a quiet decoupling of industry revenue from mass hiring that will define India's tech story for the rest of the decade.
Speaking in New Delhi the same day the World Bank published its report, IT Secretary S Krishnan argued that AI should "enhance human capabilities rather than replace them" and that humans must always remain "in the loop" as the technology spreads. The remarks align with the World Bank's own caution that gains from AI are not automatic — and that responsible deployment, privacy protection and bias prevention are prerequisites.
Krishnan's framing reflects a broader strategic posture gaining ground in Indian officialdom: adopt AI aggressively to help the country reach developed-nation status within two decades, but keep human oversight and strategic autonomy at the center rather than ceding control to foreign frontier labs. The World Bank's finding that developing countries need small, low-cost AI tools tailored to local languages and needs — rather than frontier-scale models and data centers — gives that position an economic rationale.
It is a carefully balanced line: faster than the caution of Western regulators, more guarded than the maximalist push of Silicon Valley. Whether it holds will be tested as AI adoption scales across Indian enterprises — where the World Bank already counts roughly one in five firms using AI chatbots — and as the IT sector's graduate pipeline feels the pressure documented by The Economist.
