The Five Eyes intelligence alliance issued a joint statement this week warning that frontier AI models are improving fast enough to overwhelm current cybersecurity practices within months. "The timeline is not years, it is months," the agencies wrote, signed by leaders including the NSA's Cybersecurity Directorate and the UK's National Cyber Security Centre.
The alliance expects offensive capability on par with Anthropic's Fable 5 and OpenAI's Daybreak to reach the general public within twelve months, even as labs try to restrict access — because open-source releases have historically trailed commercial frontier models by only about half a year. The warning follows a US directive ordering Anthropic to suspend foreign-national access to its Mythos and Fable 5 models, and a tightened CISA patch mandate cutting the federal response window to 72 hours.
Rather than addressing IT departments, the statement is aimed squarely at boards and executives, framing AI-driven cyber risk as a business continuity issue rather than a technical one. "Breaches will occur," the agencies wrote. "Preparedness helps you contain them quickly."
